Find the right fetching toy for your dog:

It's crucial to choose a fetching toy that fits your dog's size and retrieving behaviour. Toys that are too heavy or too big could be unwieldy and demotivate your dog.

Depending on your dog's preferences, the ideal material may vary. Some dogs prefer rubbery textures, while others prefer fabric or wood. Make sure the material you choose is durable and safe.

If your dog likes to play in the water or swim, a floatable fetching toy might be the best choice. Waterproof toys allow for retrieving fun at the beach, lake or pool.

How do I teach my dog to fetch?

Choose the right retrieving toy: Start with a suitable retrieving stick or dummy that suits your dog. The size and weight should be appropriate for your dog.

Arouse interest: Show your dog the retrieving toy and let her sniff it. Praise and positive reinforcement can awaken her interest.

Introduce the bring command: When the dog has taken the toy, say the word "Bring" or a similar command.

Reward at handing over: When your dog brings the toy to you, reward her with treats and words of praise. The hand-over should be positively reinforced.

Increase throwing step by step: Start by dropping the toy only a few metres away. Encourage your dog to fetch it and bring it back to you. Slowly increase the distance of the throw as your dog gains more confidence.

Remain patient and reward each successful attempt.

Practice makes perfect: Repeat the training regularly to reinforce the retrieving. Vary the environment and practice in different situations.
