Dogs and cats are the most popular pets in the EU
Many people cannot imagine living without their four-legged friend, rodent or feathered friend. In the EU, particularly dogs and cats have found a place in our hearts.

Dogs and cats are the most popular pets in the EU

Pets are seen as part of the family, not only in Germany, but in other countries as well. Many people cannot imagine living without their four-legged friend, rodent or feathered friend. The inhabitants of the 28 EU states are exceedingly fond of dogs and cats. According to the surveys of the European Pet Food Industry Federation (FEDIAF), at least one pet lives in more than 80 million households in the EU. In 26 per cent of these households there is at least one cat and in 18 per cent of them at least one dog.

That shows that across cultures, dogs and cats have become an important family member for many Europeans and are held in high esteem. Top of the list for dog and cat owners is Romania, where in 46 per cent of all households there is at least one dog or cat. The numbers are lowest for Spain and Austria: In Austria, 12 per cent of all households have at least one dog, and in Spain in eleven per cent of all households there is at least one cat.

In absolute numbers, in 2017 there were about 74.4 million cats and 66.4 million dogs in the EU, in addition to 35.4 million birds, 21.7 million small animals, 9.4 million aquariums and 6.4 million reptiles.

Pets not only enrich our lives, but also the EU economy:
The pet food industry has 100,000 employees. 132 pet food companies produce 8.5 million tons of pet food annually and generate a turnover of 20.5 billions Euros.
Further 900,000 jobs in logistics, services and numerous other economic sectors are equally connected to the pet market.
16 billions Euros are generated annually by products (7 billions Euros) and services (9 billions Euros) for pets.
