BE NORDIC Charity – Ghost Nets Initiative 2021

We support marine protection projects with the sales from our BE NORDIC series. Already in 2019, we were able to retrieve ghost nets off the islands Fehmarn and Rügen together with professional divers from Ghost Fishing and the Society for Saving Dolphins (Gesellschaft zur Rettung der Delphine e.V.)  In 2020, the focus of our initiative was on fag ends and their harmful effects on marine life in particular.

This year, a cooperation of various companies from the pet supply sector, initiated by MEGAZOO, resulted in a renewed initiative to retrieve ghost nets. There are tons of these floating around in our oceans, along with abandoned fishing tackle, torn off trawl nets, lost gillnets as well as fish traps and much more. All these often contain lead, which is an additional pollutant for the environment. Ghost nets are a massive danger for sea life, and also form a significant part of all the plastic floating in our oceans. Daily, sea animals are caught in ghost nets and meet a torturous death.
For the initiative "MEGAZOO & FRIENDS" running from 20 to 28 May 2021, we were able to recruit the renowned marine biologist, research diver, environmentalist, photographer, cinematographer, explorer as well as author Robert Marc Lehmann.

The envisaged search area will concentrate on the Kiel Fjord, the Lübeck Bay and Eckernförde, all areas off the coast of Schleswig-Holstein in the Baltic Sea.

By the end of February, "MEGAZOO & FRIENDS" was already able to collect 54,000 Euros in donations.
