Dog clothing for protection against the cold, wet conditions and safety in the dark

Of course, dogs already have a natural protection through their fur that keeps them warm. Nevertheless, an additional layer of clothing can be sensible.

Especially short-haired, weather-sensitive, older dogs or dogs with health problems benefit from additional protection against wet conditions and the cold. Clothing is also a good way to protect the pet from chilling in a cold environment, when the dog has no opportunity to run to get warm or during a break in between training phases.

Dog pullovers: Protection from the cold

Dog pullovers provide protection from the cold on cool, dry days. They are especially suitable for smaller dogs that are more exposed to the cold ground. They come in a variety of colours, patterns and styles, so you can put together the best outfit for your dog.

Besides them looking good, you should pay particular attention to their quality and fit. The pullover you choose should offer your dog enough freedom of movement and be neither too tight nor too big. You can choose the right size from XXS to XL. Pullovers with an opening in the back can also be optimally combined with a harness.

Dog coats: The best protection in wet and cold conditions

Dog coats and rain coats are available in various designs, warming the pet more or less, water- and wind-repellent as well as waterproof.

When choosing a suitable coat, the dog's individual need for warmth and the ambient temperature should be taken into account. Choose between models with different degrees of warmth between 0 stars, without insulating effect, and 4 stars for coats with very high wind and cold protection.

You can also choose between different fits. The Regular fit is suitable for the majority of all dogs, such as Poodles, Dalmatians or Border Collies. The coat should offer a way to combine it easily with a collar or harness. Some coats already have an integrated harness, others can be combined with a collar or harness via an opening in the back.

How can I see if a dog coat fits well?

A well-fitting dog coat offers sufficient freedom of movement, does not chafe or slip, and is neither too small nor too large. It should fit the dog comfortably not only when the dog is standing but also when she is moving. The dog should be able to move her elbows forward and back without hindrance, even when running.

A couple of fingers should fit between the armpit and the belly strap, and the belly strap should not be too tight – there should also be space for at least 2 fingers.
